BOSS BABE: LIZZIE RENKERT

Lizzie Renkert is one half of boho label, We Are Kindred which she started with her sister, Georgie, in 2013.  After a successful career in publishing, the former Editor of Madison turned her hand to designing and We are Kindred was born.  Known for their floaty designs and feminine prints, We Are Kindred has been worn by the likes of our very own, Elle Ferguson, Elyse Knowles, Rebecca Harding & Rachel Finch.

In conjunction with this week’s Boss Babe, we are also running a competition on Instagram via @elleeffect and @wearekindred where you can go into the draw to win a We Are Kindred voucher and an Elle Effect Tanning Kit.

You launched We Are Kindred in 2013, what led you to launch your own fashion label?

My business partner and best friend, Georgie and I saw a small gap in an overcrowded market for beautiful feminine pieces that make women look and more importantly, feel, amazing. Kindred is unpretentious, welcoming and positive and we’ve loved creating the brand with our team.

You previously were the Editor of Madison Magazine, what are some of the skills that have enabled you to launch a fashion label?

The world of magazines taught me to be resilient, hard-working and versatile in my skill set. I think these qualities have helped me navigate my way through launching a business and building a brand from scratch.

You work with your sister Georgie; what is it like working with family?

It’s the best. We adore each other and we adore working together. We always agree on the things that really matter and any little niggles are forgotten quickly.

What has been a career highlight for you?

Editing Madison and running Kindred. I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to meld my creative side with my business side. Changing careers after nearly 20 years wasn’t easy and I’m proud of myself for admitting what I don’t know and learning new things every day.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt along the way?

Things that are incredibly challenging end up being the things that help us to develop and grow.

What does your day-to-day look like?

I wake up at 5 am, do Pilates, clean the house, make lunches, get the kids to school. Then it’s time for job number 2 to start. I head into the Kindred studio and store at 9.30/10 and work with the team on production, finance, design, e-commerce, wholesale, branding and shoots. It’s never dull and I never, ever get through everything. I then rush home (I’m always late), have dinner with my family, read the kids stories and then I’ll binge a few episodes of whatever show I’m watching, or listen to a podcast while I’m doing emails before falling into bed at about 11. The Calm app helps send me to sleep as I’m a pretty high energy person and find it hard to wind down as I’m always “on”.

The modern world is a busy one! What is your version of self-care?

My Pilates practice, which I do up to 6 times a week, is what keeps me sane. I’ve been doing Pilates for 20 years and I adore it.

What three things would we always find in your beauty bag?

Ultraviolet sunscreen, lippy (that I dab on my cheeks and lips) and Chanel No 5.

If you could have any five women sitting around a dinner table with you, who would they be and why?

Michelle Obama, Amal Clooney, Iris Apfel, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

What's the last song you listened to?

Miss You, by The Rolling Stones

Parting words of advice for being a #bossbabe in work and life?

Don’t take any of it too seriously. And let yourself laugh. Believe me, I do.
