Read on for our exclusive interview with Marianna.
Prior to growing your global following through blogging, how was your love for beauty established?
My love for beauty started as a teenager, My dad would take me to beauty counters at department stores and the sales associates would help me pick out products, so I felt like I was getting educated from professionals from such a young age. When I graduated from college, I was working as a TV host and I had to do my own hair and makeup for much of my work - so over time I picked up little tips and tricks that I would use on myself then took the things I learned and started a youtube channel in 2012.
When did you know you wanted to have your own brand and how long did it take to get off the ground?
My co-founder Lauren Gores Ireland and I started working on Summer Fridays in 2016. We wanted to create a skincare line with clean ingredients and Lauren was early pregnant at the time - so finding clean and effective skincare was extra important to her during that time. We started working on the brand in 2016 and launched Summer Fridays in 2018 with our jet lag mask.
The Jet Lag Mask quickly deemed cult status, which is a huge achievement in a saturated beauty industry! How did you identify a gap in the market for this product?
I am a beauty junkie and an educated consumer. I am constantly checking to see what new launches come out and I get so eager to test and try them. From testing products for so many years, being a consumer of beauty products and then from my influencer experience, I had a good idea of what I thought may resonate with people, what my followers were looking for and how picky I am when choosing products. So all of it combined led to the magic of jet lag mask!
Did you ever aspire to be your own boss?
I’m not sure that I aspired to be my own boss but I did aspire to not work for other people. But ultimately, you still always work for someone. Even if you have your own business, there are people you work with or answer to. And then the stresses of being your own boss are much greater as well - there are so many positives but there is so much that goes into having your own business!
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt along the way?
Trust your intuition - if you really feel confidently about something even when others might not think it's the right choice, do what you think is best for your brand.
Your product offering for Summer Fridays tells us you have your finger-on-the-pulse when it comes to beauty trends. How do you stay ahead of the curve?
We don’t really think about beauty trends, we are creating products that you hopefully want to use for years to come! We think about formulating products you’ll want to reuse and will be a staple for you in the long run.
Owning your own brand, as well as being a global influencer and content creator must make your life very busy! What is your version of self-care?
I love to just be home and decompress. Right now I am getting a lot of that, but usually I am always on the go so I appreciate the time I get to just be in my space, workout, spend time with loved ones and of course - face mask ;)
What three things would we always find in your beauty bag?
Summer Fridays vanilla lip butter balm, my iPhone and business cards
What's the last song you listened to?
I’m really into PARTYNEXTDOOR new album
