BOSS BABE: TASH OAKLEY
Motivated by sharing the importance of self love, CEO of Monday Swimwear and Co-Creator of A Bikini A Day, Tash Oakley says bringing confidence and comfort to women is what Monday was built on.
The multi-faceted Sydney-born businesswoman (model / presenter / blogger / entrepreneur / digital influencer) now resides in LA where she oversees the design and development of Monday Swimwear alongside best friend and business partner Devin Brugman.
The duo have just released their latest collection which includes a new sustainable offering with fabrics made from recycled nylon and PET bottles.
We sat down with Tash to find out more about her journey into business, the last song she listened to and the best advice she has for budding #bossbabes.
Tash, you’re an inspiration to so many women as you have led by example that if you pursue your passions great things follow. Can you tell us about your early life and how it influenced you to pursue a career in swimwear?
Growing up in Sydney and having a healthy, beach culture engrained in me at such as a young age definitely paved the way for my passion for the beach and all things swim. I spent so much time at the beach and in the water that like most young girls I grew an affinity for swimwear. Sydney has such a relaxed culture and lifestyle, I shopped, and now design, with comfort in mind!
Was there a defining moment where you knew you could offer something of value to women?
Devin, my best friend and now business partner, and I started our first blog, A Bikini A Day. We tried on hundreds of bikinis a day and realised how hard it was to find a bikini that fit our body types- that was flattering and didn’t compromise on style or fit. I wouldn’t call it a defining moment, but a true eye opening couple of years that made us realise how the industry needed a swimwear line that designed with every body type in mind.
Did you always dream of being your own boss? How did Monday Swimwear and A Bikini a Day come to be?
A Bikini a Day started with Devin and I’s passion in mind- photography and embracing the beach culture. Monday Swimwear was the natural next step in our journey. I grew up with my mother and father both small business owners. I guess in a way, I subconsciously pursued their footsteps.
What does your day to day involvement look like?
I work closely with each, very integral person on my team, to perfect every aspect of the brand. Even when I am not physically in my office, I am on work calls with my customer service reps, speaking and working closely with operations, and of course our design team, to move existing projects along and collaborate for new ones.
As a whole, I like to brainstorm with my entire team to get new input because eight brains are better than one. The brand did start with just Devin and I, so at one point we wore every single hat. As our brand grew, it was so important to bring on the right people to help us grow, but Monday Swimwear is still our baby and we like to be involved in the day to day and direction of our growth!
How important is it for you to empower and motivate women to love and embrace their bodies?
This is definitely one of the most important aspects of our brand and something constantly at the top of our mind. My mission and passion for self love is something that’s transcended to my team and something we never lose sight of. We love working with other women and brands that have the same values.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learnt along the way?
I’ve learned so many amazing lessons along the way as my brand, and my role within my brand, has evolved. However, I try to stay true to myself and the values on which I built Monday - to bring a sense of confidence and comfort to women- every step of the way.
The modern world is a busy one! What is your version of self-care?
For me, self care is so important and starts from within. I love to eat healthy, exercise daily, drink lots of water, and get at least eight hours of sleep. With my travel and lifestyle it’s important for me to remain healthy, and balanced. I also do love enjoying a warm bath and glass of red wine to unwind.
What three things would we always find in your beauty bag?
La Mer Moisturising Cream, Fresh tinted lip balm, and my favourite mascara, YSL’s Shock Volumising Mascara.
If you could have any five women sitting around a dinner table with you, who would they be?
This is so hard because there are so many amazing women, I’d want to choose but probably- Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle, Greta Thunberg, Reese Witherspoon and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.
What's the last song you listened to? Only Child by Tierra Whack.
Parting words of advice for being a #bossbabe in work and life?
Work hard, do right by others and yourself, don’t take life or work too seriously, have fun, and enjoy every step of the way. Everyone’s journey is different so focus on yours! As long as you’re doing your best, be proud of your growth and your journey.
