BOSS BABE: Michelle Battersby
Michelle Battersby is the epitome of a #bossbabe. She landed herself the huge responsibility of launching Bumble into the Australian market (without any real marketing experience) and within three years, saw three million users sign up to the app. She's clever, articulate, inclusive and inspiring. We sat down with the new Chief Marketing Officer of Keep It Cleaner to chat business, summer and self-tan.
We've all read how you started your career in corporate banking but after one call with Bumble's founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, ended up with the incredible role as Bumble's Country Lead. And quite recently, announced your resignation for an exciting new role with Keep It Cleaner, Tell us, what are the most important traits you think someone can bring to a business these days?
Leading by example has always been a big one for me. I think it’s the small things like offering to help with things you know are outside of your job scope, being an ally for people and viewing anyone in a more junior role to you as an opportunity to mentor someone.
If you are a junior or in your first role the people that stand out to me are the ones always going above and beyond, putting their hands up for additional tasks. Those entry level roles are an opportunity to soak up everything you can about the company you are working with and to learn new skills, and the easiest way to impress those more senior to you is to show you are willing to learn.
Working in a fast paced role with Bumble with such a lot of travel (and now with Keep It Cleaner) must take its toll on you. What is your version of self care?
Sometimes I am so good at this, other times not so much! For starters, I think you can’t be too hard on yourself because balance looks different to everyone. What works for some may not work for others. My main advice is to remember that is so important for your mental health to ensure you are finding time to switch off or focus on something else. For me, self care is going for a walk with my dog or listening to a podcast. When travelling, I try to ensure I exercise each day as I find it really helps with jetlag, gets your body ready for work and helps you focus.
If you could have any five women sitting around a dinner table with you, who would they be and why?
Sheryl Sandberg - She would have to be at the top of many women's list of icons, the opportunity to learn from or speak to her would be unimaginable.
Meghan Markle - Too many reasons why! Her Vogue cover really spoke to me, I loved her diversity of choice in terms of the women she selected. She’s redefining what it means to be a royal and is making a positive change in the world whilst doing it.
Emily Weiss - I admire anyone who can build a brand with such a cult following. I also love that she worked hard to get where she is and has such a strong career journey.
Hailey Bieber - she has serious cool girl vibes!
Kylie Jenner - this one is just for pure gossip reasons, I want to know what’s going down with Travis!
We're in the throes of summer here in Australia, what does summer mean for you?
Summer for me is all about being outdoors. I love spending time at the beach and my favourite thing to do in summer is to enjoy a cocktail at my local, Hugos Manly. I've recently relocated to Melbourne so am on the hunt for a new spot!
What three things would we always find in your beauty bag?
- Elle Effect Tan - of course!
- Sunnies Face Fluffmate Lipstick in Nudist - I discovered this brand on a trip to the Philippines for work, it is owned by Martine Ho who is a total girl boss and inspiration to me!
- Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair - a huge indulgence but a product I love!
- LaPrairie Skin Caviar Eye Serum
What's the last song you listened to?
I’ve been listening to Taylor Swift’s latest album Lover on repeat.
Parting words of advice for being a #bossbabe in work and in life?
Trust your gut and believe in your own intuition. In my experience it will always guide you in the right direction. Chase the things that scare you. If you’re not experiencing things that push you out of your comfort zone or challenge you then you’ve probably stopped learning and it’s time for a change!
