BOSS BABE: JEN ATKIN
Jen Atkin really needs no introduction. She’s an entrepreneur and celebrity hair stylist, who New York Times named ‘the most influential in the world’. She’s tended to the tresses of Jessica Alba and Kim Kardashian and she’s the founder of coveted haircare brand Ouai and digital hair community and destination, Mane Addicts. Jen is humble, hardworking and dedicated to making other people feel good about themselves. We sat down with this #bossbabe to talk balance, self-care and lessons she’s learnt in business.
As an extremely busy entrepreneur and celebrity hair stylist, how do you split your time between the two?
Lately I’ve been loving being at the brand new OUAI & Mane Addicts HQ, I like being more present in the office and seeing my team working. I still love doing hair but I’ve definitely been spending more and more time in my entrepreneurial world!
With OUAI and Mane Addicts, what does your day to day involvement look like?
I try to be involved as much as I can. At OUAI I have a lot of meetings for product development, merch, marketing, and board meetings. Over at Mane, which is right next door to our OUAI office, I film a lot of content, discuss future activations, stalk hairstylists on my insta that we may want to work with, and strategise for future brand deals/collabs.
Did you always dream of being your own boss? How did the businesses come to be?
I think I’ve always been the type of person to help others and solve people’s problems. I would put together mood boards for friends when they wanted to change their hair colour or haircut and realised there wasn’t really a platform to inform women on hair trends, treatments etc. That’s when Mane Addicts came about; it was a space where women can go to source everything hair!
Then the story behind OUAI was: I would always tell my girlfriends to buy biotin pills for hair growth and I really wanted to create a supplement of my own that women could take for thin, dry or oily hair. That was the original idea for my company OUAI, which then grew into a full product line with shampoos, conditioners and styling products for the everyday woman.
What is the biggest lesson you've learnt along the way?
There’s enough work for everyone
The modern world is a busy one! What is your version of self care?
I get massages as often as I can, have my friends over for game nights, and spend quality time with my husband at home.
If you could have any five women sitting around a dinner table with you, who would they be?
Summer has just wrapped up here in Australia, what does summer mean for you?
More time in my pool!
What three things would we always find in your beauty bag?
KKW Lipstick, dook poop bags and a Slip silk black scrunchie
What's the last song you listened to?
Bill Withers- Lovely Day
Parting words of advice for being a #bossbabe in work and in life?
Go after what you’re truly passionate about. If you don’t know and are aren’t sure, get out there and start trying different things you really enjoy doing. Be nice to everyone you meet & remember to always have a work/life balance! It’s important for not only keeping you sane, but also making both parts succeed!
